technique preserves the quadriceps tendon. As a result, patients can move their knees faster with less pain. Most patients need stay only one night in the hospital. The recovery is very rapid, with most returning to full-time employment within two weeks.
Partial replacement or Unicompartment Arthroplasty (MIS UNI) is indicated for patients whose arthritis affects only one side of their knees. Typically, the inside of the knee has lost the cartilage and the knee becomes painful because the bones are rubbing together. These knees typically have full motion and no major amount of angulation. Surgeries are done with minimal bloodloss and usually under a regional anesthetic.
Because only 1/3 of the knee is resurfaced, these knees perform exceptionally well. Most patients can return to all activities other than running. Tennis, golf, weight training, and skiing are permitted. Implant lifespan is equal to that of a standard knee replacement. Although there is no age limit, patients weighing more than 200 lbs. are not good candidates. A consultation with Dr. Anthony S. Unger is necessary to determine your eligibility for this type of surgery.
